Post Injury Repair and Pain Relief for SHOULDERS

Overview

Whether it is biceps tendonitis, an impingement, a rotator cuff injury, frozen shoulder or pain resulting from poor posture, the bottom line is that shoulder pain can be very limiting and stubborn. The shoulder joint, anatomically known as the Glenohumeral Joint (GH), is very mobile compared to similar joints like the hip. This is to allow for extra functional movement of the upper extremity. While this is a necessary advantage for us humans, it creates orthopedic challenges that lead to injuries.

What is very important to know about the shoulder complex, as with all parts of the body, is that it is directly affected by other body regions. What occurs at the scapula, thoracic spine and ribcage are vital to consider. Whether it is poor posture, lack of mobility or hypermobility, Mark is always both zooming in on what is happening locally in the shoulder while also using a wider lens to see what is happening in the broader area. It is all connected.

More specifically, it is very common for people with shoulder injuries to also have poor posture. This posture often includes an excessive forward curvature (kyphosis) of the thoracic spine with rounded shoulders and restricted movement in the ribcage. So while the injury and its symptoms needs to be treated, whether it is a shoulder impingement, biceps tendinopathy or a rotator cuff strain, those other surrounding postural issues also need to be addressed. While those postural issues may be secondary concerns in the injury treatment and recovery process, depending on the severity and acuteness of the condition, they should not be ignored in order to ensure full recovery and optimal performance.

The very local understanding of injury pathology and the accompanying skill-set to zoom out and see the related bigger picture is an approach sorely lacking in physical therapy and modern injury recovery standard of care. It is one that Mark brings into every session to treat every client.

Injuries we treat include:

  • Rotator Cuff Strains and Tears

  • Biceps and Pectoral Tendonitis

  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)

  • Shoulder Impingement

  • Scar tissue from surgery and old injuries

  • Shoulder (Glenohumeral) Instability

  • Rounded Shoulders and Poor Posture

  • Brachial Nerve Entrapments

About Our Treatments

Mark's treatments for shoulder injuries vary depending on the particular injury but always involve customized treatments and exercises tailored to each person and each injury. He incorporates a dynamic range of methodologies and techniques for shoulder pain and dysfunction based on the specific needs. That’s why Mark takes his time to incorporate the information from your intake form, your initial conversation and his biomechanics / muscle strength / flexibility assessment to truly understand the underlying nature of the problem.

Like with other body regions, the specific type of inury and its severity will impact the treatment strategy. An acute frozen shoulder or shoulder impingement may be too symptomatic too treat aggressively at first while a rotator cuff strain, biceps tendonosis or less acute impingement may be able to handle more movement and pressure.

Moreover, the length of each session may need to vary depending on how complicated the overall profile is. For example, if the issue is a straightforward and localized problem in the shoulder joint itself that just needs focussed work, then the sessions may only need to be 30-45 minutes. But if there are definitely contributing factors coming from the neck, thoracic region or surrounding nerves, it is possible that longer, more frequent and/or a few extra sessions may be needed to see optimal results.

Regardless of what the prognosis is, Mark will always be transparent and do his best to get you in and out with as few treatments as possible while also resourcing his colleagues and referral networks as needed.

Mark's goal is to reduce one's symptoms while also trying to get to the root of the problem when possible.
