Post Injury Knee Rehabilitation

Post Injury Repair and Pain Relief for KNEE & RUNNING INJURIES

Located in Manhattan - Midtown and Upper West Side

Overview

Whether you're a dancer, have a desk job, played football in those glory days or pound the pavement on the streets of NYC , knee pain can range from annoying to painful to crippling. The knee joint is complex and it provides important stability for the lower body. Injuries to the knee can relate to poor biomechanics and weight distribution in the ankle, hip and pelvis. Likewise, knee pain can cause changes in gait and weight distribution that can negatively affect other parts of the body, especially the hip and low back.

The knee is comprised of major ligaments and tendons, large and strong muscles, unique cartilage rings, prominent bony structures and multiple joints. Common traumatic injuries to these structures, such as ACL tears, meniscus tears, bone fractures and full knee replacements can involve surgery and months of remedial, long-term PT. Once those patients progress past the acute phase of post-surgical recovery, Mark can work in combination with surgeons and PTs to help patients navigate to advanced phases of the rehab process.

For more lower and moderate-level knee injuries, it is always important to consider what is happening below and above the knee joints. Injuries to the knee and surrounding structures, such as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Patella Tendinopathy, various types of bursitis, pain behind the knee, are often the result of misalignments somewhere else. These issues could be in the form of a leg length discrepancy, lack of mobility at the ankles or hip joints, poor glut muscle stability in one or both hips, a previous injury that caused a long-term compensation, tightness in the hamstrings, hip flexors, ITBs, or poor footwear.

So when assessing a new client who has knee pain, Mark always considers all of the local history related to the affected knee. This will include previous sports played and exercise routines, injury history, symptoms and biomechanics of that joint itself. In addition, the broader biomechanics will also be evaluated using overhead and single leg squat assessments, additional postural and movement testing and a myriad of assessment tools.

Knee-related Injuries that Mark and his team treat include:

  • Patella Tendonitis

  • ITB Pain

  • Patellofemoral Syndrome

  • Hamstring Strains

  • Quadriceps Strains

About Our Treatments

Treatments and training sessions for knee injuries are customized for each person and each injury. The knee is a complex joint with a lot of unique, strong and important structures. Because of this complexity, it takes a careful eye, a thoughtful assessment and a methodical treatment strategy in order to yield the best results.

With all of that said, the treatment strategies and training modalities that Mark incorporates into any given session ranges widely. This is because the issues affecting and affected by the knee are so vast and multi-faceted. For the knee joint structures in particular, there are very specific Active Release protocols for addressing injuries to the MCL, LCL, patella tendon, each meniscus, the knee joint capsule and all of the muscles and tendons that attach into and around the knee, including the Iliotibial Band.

All of Mark's skills in corrective exercises and post-injury rehab often play a role in knee-related issues if a client is not currently in PT. If Mark finds any imbalances or weaknesses in the assessment process that can be corrected with activation, strength and mobility exercises, these can be fused with the Active Release and Medical Massage treatments.

Our treatments and training sessions may include any of the following:

  • Active Release Techniques

  • Trigger Point - manual and tool-assisted

  • Deep Tissue Massage

  • Myofascial Therapy`

  • Corrective Exercises

  • Graston

  • Balance and Functional Training

  • Function Training
