Throughout more than 23 years of treating clients, I have found that many people believe their pain originates where they feel it. Because of this added stability, serious injuries such as disc herniations or spinal instability occur less frequently in the thoracic spine than in other regions of the back. However, this stability comes with an important tradeoff.

Every time you reach overhead, rotate your body, throw a ball, lift groceries, perform a push-up, or simply walk, your thoracic spine and rib cage must contribute smooth, coordinated movement. When they don't, nearby joints are often forced to compensate.

This is one of the reasons why healthcare professionals who specialize in movement often evaluate areas beyond where symptoms are actually felt.

Your shoulder blades, also known as the scapulae, are among the most remarkable bones in the human body. Unlike many other bones, the scapula is not directly attached to another bone through a traditional joint. Instead, it "floats" along the back of the rib cage, suspended and controlled almost entirely by muscles. This unique design allows the shoulder blade to move in multiple directions while providing a stable foundation for the shoulder joint.

One of the most common observations I have made throughout my his clinical practice is that many clients initially believe they have a shoulder problem when the shoulder itself is structurally healthy. Instead, poor movement of the shoulder blade often changes the mechanics of the entire shoulder complex, making even simple activities uncomfortable. What Is Scapular Control?
Scapular control refers to your body's ability to position and move the shoulder blades appropriately during both movement and rest. If that foundation becomes unstable, everything built upon it becomes less efficient.
